Joliet, Ill. March 14, 2016 —Joliet Township High School and Chicagoland Speedway concluded a seven-month culinary arts project with students this week which raised $5,762 for charity, adding two new kids’ meals to the 2016 Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway menu.

“The seven months of hard work paid off for all of the students involved as they were able to showcase not only their culinary skills, but also develop project based business skills that will prove highly relevant in their future career aspirations,” said Scott Paddock, President of Chicagoland Speedway.

The fundraising event, “Cooking For A Cause,” took place last week at Joliet Central High School’s new Student Center. Joliet organizations, Vilaseca Josephine Center and Morningstar Mission, were selected by the students and will share the money raised. Beyond ticket sales from the event, the donations were made possible by the generous sponsorship of ExxonMobil, Martin Whalen Office Solutions, Abri Credit Union, Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, D’Arcy Motors, First Community Bank of Joliet, Joliet Bank and Trust, Fears Construction and TCBY.

Guests in attendance were asked to vote on the four finalists’ kids’ meals determined during the initial judging last month. As a result, Kaylie Duke, Mai Pena and Raven Portis’ Tiger Tenders and Emaree Baker, Aaryss Stallings, Brandon Weatherall and Kealin Smith’s Pigs in a Blanket were selected to appear on the 2016 concessions menu at Chicagoland Speedway. Both kids’ meals took a unique take on old school favorites with Tiger Tenders utilizing a corndog-type batter to coat chicken strips and Pigs in a Blanket being shrunk down to easy to eat bite-sized portions.

The Pizza Dog of Tyler Campbell and Jacob Corn and Pit Stop Pizza Fries from Breanna Gaskin, Daisy Gonzalez, Stephanie Reyes and Ebony Lee finished as the runner-ups.

“We are proud of our students’ work and dedication to this project. Our students proved themselves to be creative in their kids’ meal innovations and their artistry in the boxes they prepared for serving their meals,” said Dr. Cheryl McCarthy, Superintendent of Joliet Township High School. “We thank Scott and the staff at Chicagoland Speedway and Levy Restaurants for giving our students an opportunity to engage in this real-world learning experience.”

In addition to the curriculum program challenge, which allowed students in advanced culinary classes to gain real life experience in the areas of culinary arts, marketing, sales, community outreach, event planning and hospitality, all of the participants will have the opportunity to apply for two scholarships totaling $2,500.

Vilaseca Josephine Center works to educate children in an integral formation and create an environment where their spiritual, academic, and moral gifts can grow within themselves.

MorningStar Mission has served men, women, children and families in Joliet and Will Country since 1909, offering hope through one-time meals and long-term recovery programs.

Cooking for a Cause is a curriculum program that has been implemented in Joliet Township High School for the past two years in which culinary arts students’ partner with Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway food and beverage partner, Levy Restaurants, to help create innovative ideas for menu items. The year-long program allows students in advanced culinary classes to gain real life experience in the areas of culinary arts, marketing, sales, community outreach, event planning and hospitality.
