Joliet, Ill. – March 3, 2017 – In celebration of National Anthem Day, Chicagoland Speedway today announced the return of Jim Cornelison, better known as the “Gold Standard,” who will sing the ballad to kick off the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs in spectacular fashion on September 17. This will mark the fifth consecutive season that Cornelison has performed his iconic rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Magnificent Mile-and-a-Half.
“We are excited to welcome back Jim Cornelison as an integral part of the pre-race festivities as Chicagoland Speedway kicks off the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs,” said Scott Paddock, president of Chicagoland Speedway. “The pageantry and patriotism that is synonymous with the sport of NASCAR is the perfect fit for the iconic voice of Jim Cornelison.”
Cornelison has belted out the National Anthem at Chicago-area events since 1996 and brought his talents to Chicagoland Speedway beginning in 2013.
“The National Anthem is a revered tradition among Chicagoans, especially among Chicago sports fans,” said Cornelison. “For this reason, it is a great honor to sing the Star Spangled Banner on the national platform presented before the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs at Chicagoland Speedway. Every year it has become more exciting as the fans have come to embrace being involved in the anthem.”
