Signature Sandwich Project Winners Named With All Proceeds Going to Daybreak Center and Morningstar Mission

Cooking for a Cause

Joliet, Ill. April 16, 2015 — Joliet Township High School and Chicagoland Speedway concluded a seven-month long culinary arts project with students this week, raising $6,306 for charity, adding two new sandwiches to the 2015 Chicagoland Speedway menu and providing scholarships for two students.

The March fundraising event, “Cooking For A Cause,” benefitted two Joliet organizations chosen by the students, with $3,153 going to both Day Break Center and Morningstar Mission. Beyond ticket sales from the event, the donation was made possible by the generous sponsorship of ExxonMobil, Martin Whalen Office Solutions, Abri Credit Union, Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, D’Arcy Motors, First Community Bank of Joliet and Joliet Bank and Trust.

Guests were asked to vote on the four sandwich finalists, with Isaiah Alicea and Octavio Vargas’ Jibarito Island Sandwich and Sarah Reina and Samantha Wieder’s TigerFun Chicken being selected to appear on the 2015 Chicagoland Speedway concessions menu. The Jibarito Island Sandwich features fried plantains, a special sauce, skirt steak, onions and tomatoes while the TigerFun Chicken is a chicken breast breaded with Fuyuns and topped with French fries and ranch dressing.

The Victory Lane Pulled Pork of Maria Gonzalez and Eric Lara and the Flamin’ Chicken Sandwich from Veronica Cerrillo, Miryam Cisneros and Taylor Elliott finished as the runner-up at each school.

Since last September, 40 students from both Joliet Central and Joliet West worked under the guidance of their teachers and Levy Restaurants, Chicagoland Speedway’s concession partner, to create a signature menu item for the 2015 race season at Chicagoland Speedway.

In addition to the curriculum competition, which allowed students in advanced culinary classes to gain real life experience in the areas of culinary arts, marketing, sales, community outreach, event planning and hospitality, all of the participants will have the opportunity to apply for two scholarships totaling $2,500. The winners of the scholarships were Horacio Angeles of Joliet West and Lesly Lopez of Joliet Central.

Daybreak Center operates 24-hours a day, 365 days a year and provides emergency housing and supportive services to individuals and families who are homeless. Some participants in the program are in need of short-term housing, as a result of a situational crisis. Others need support services as they work to reestablish permanent housing.

MorningStar Mission has served men, women, children and families in Joliet and Will Country since 1909, offering hope through one-time meals and long-term recovery programs.
