Austin Dillon takes the win at the Fast Five 255 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Chicagoland Speedway
Joliet, Ill. – September 16, 2011 – Austin Dillon captured the checkered flag for the Fast Five 225 at Chicagoland Speedway in his second race of the season.
Stars of the Fast Five, the fifth installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster kicked off the race as co-Grand Marshal’s and Gibson sang the national anthem as Brewster acted as Honorary Starter. Gibson and Brewster weren’t the only two stars at Chicagoland Speedway this evening though. Gatorade sprayed throughout Gatorade Victory Lane as Dillon celebrated his second win of the season—pit crew-surfing included.
Austin, 21, is now three points out of the top spot in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points standings behind James Buescher.
“I know we’ve had great trucks leading up to Chicagoland, we just haven’t been able to finish. Making mistakes has hurt us all year so I’m very proud of my crew tonight.” said Dillon.
“I’m really proud of them. He’s a great young man and a great race driver,” said grandfather and team owner, Richard Childress as he sat next to Dillon in a Friday night post-race press conference. “He’s really good at working and finding that groove and once he finds it that’s when he starts making good time. There at the end, crew chief Danny Stockham made a perfect call which got him out in front of Kevin [Harvick].”
Dillon held off runner-up, Kevin Harvick when he took the lead in the truck race during the final round of pit stops. Sunoco Rookie of the Year, Nelson Piquet Jr., Parker Kligerman and Kyle Busch rounded off the top 5 respectively.
“As a driver you want to win the race, especially with a truck like that,” Harvick said after the race. “But I tell you, nine times out of ten you don’t win them. It just seems like it always comes down to strategy.”
