Pierce Holds on for First Win

The Weld Racing USAC Silver Crown Series hit the mile-and-a-half Chicagoland Speedway for the first time for the USG Fiberock 100.

Aaron Pierce won the inaugural event which was filled with plenty of drama Friday.

Pole sitter Pierce grabbed the top spot in the closing laps from Jay Drake, who lost his engine with eight laps to go. It was Pierce’s first win in the series, which runs on dirt tracks, short tracks and mile-and-a-half superspeedways.

"The win feels great, it's been a long time coming," the Hoosier said.

Pete Shepherd III finished second in the race after climbing from 11th to finish second. The young driver, who races for team owner Carl Edwards, said that even with his lack of experience he could have challenged Pierce for the win.

"I think we were one caution short of giving the leader a run for the race," he said. "The car was capable of winning the race today. I'm getting there. I was one spot away from winning and that makes me feel really good."

Bryn Gohn, Dave Steele and Brian Tyler rounded up the top five.

This marked the third of four races for the series. The next superspeedway stop will be Kansas Speedway on Sept. 30.
