GOODYEAR AND IROC CONCLUDE TEST SESSIONS

NASCAR Winston Cup drivers Kevin Harvick, Bobby Labonte and Ricky Craven concluded their two-day Goodyear tire-test for the July 14 Tropicana 400. The True Value IROC Racing Series also wrapped-up their week of testing for the July 13 IROC 100 at Chicagoland Speedway. Both Goodyear and IROC deemed their test sessions successful.

Mark Keto, lead engineer for the NASCAR group at Goodyear Tire Company, said their goal this week was to bring a good consistent tire the drivers are happy with. Commenting about today?s results, Keto said, ?Today we concentrated on long runs and the drivers seem to be pleased with the tires we brought. When we get back to Akron, we will dig through the data we acquired this week and make the best choice.?

According to Keto, the tire choice for this year?s NASCAR Winston Cup Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland Speedway won?t be vastly different from 2001. ?The tire will probably be similar to that of last years. We looked at last year?s race tire today to compare to what we have this week, and as of right now, there won?t be a major change from what we used here in 2001,? said Keto.

Harvick, who participated in the two-day tire-test, recognizes the benefit of being part of this test. ?Being a part of the Goodyear Tire test at Chicagoland Speedway is definitely a benefit for us because if they change the tire, we know exactly what they will do, plus we get to help in picking the tires.? Harvick, who will return for the July 12-14 NASCAR/IROC weekend will take part in the IROC 100 on Saturday and then defend his Winston Cup victory on Sunday. ?It?s cool to come back to the place you?ve won at, especially because we had such a dominant car last year.? Harvick added, ?IROC spent a lot of time this week working on the second groove, so I think the race fans will see a little bit of a different (Winston Cup) race than last year because there should be a lot of side-by-side racing.?

Jay Signore, President of IROC, echoed Goodyear?s comments about success this week. ?We made some good headway today. We were happy with how the race car ended yesterday and today we tried to improve it.? IROC spent most of their final day working on a modified aerodynamics package. ?We were impressed with the aerodynamics package here because it appeared to settle the whole car into the race track, plus we gained 100 rpm and two mph, which is not what we were looking for, but it tells us that the car is driving better and responding all the way around the race track.?

NASCAR weekend returns to Chicagoland Speedway July 12-14 and brings with it the True Value IROC Racing Series. For tickets, call 815-727-RACE or purchase online at www.chicagolandspeedway.com.
