The Racing Experience, a Skip Barber property, ran for the first time at Chicagoland Speedway on April 21st. The focus of the weekend was a Media/VIP Day, hosted by The Racing Experience at the brand new ISC facility in Joliet, where guests and VIPs strapped in to drive real 650hp Winston Cup Stock Cars. Upon registering, drivers were offered the chance to have their once-in-a-lifetime experiences recorded by in-car cameras. Footage would capture all the lap action including pit instruction and instructor feedback. The 40 minute classroom session began when Instructor Stephan Bastrzycki addressed 50-plus students, explaining the proper way to navigate the speedway at speeds over 160 mph. From the classroom, all students were loaded into passenger vehicles and driven around the semi-banked oval for further instruction. In addition to calling out important track cues; cones, flag stations, pit exit and entrance lanes, instructors reviewed key elements of the classroom session; car control, turn-in points, acceleration and braking. As students suited up, it was obvious that some were nervous, others excited. Prospective drivers stood at the edge of pit lane anxiously waiting for their name to be called by Kelly Bussey, Executive Director of The Racing Experience and pit-boss for the day. Once behind the wheel, students were joined by an instructor seated in the passenger seat and equipped with a two-way radio. Students were encouraged to drive the car's at 100% of their handling capability while drafting and passing with up to six cars at any given time. It was apparent by the endless smiles that the opening weekend of The Racing Experience was one of the most successful and fun. Thanks to all media that made the trip out.
