An early, dry spring has construction of one of the country?s premier motorsports facilities ahead of schedule and speeding toward grand opening in Spring 2001. Chicagoland Speedway is a 1.5 mile tri-oval race track being built in Joliet, Ill., located about 30 miles southwest of Chicago near Interstate 80, Interstate 55 and Illinois Route 53. Site preparation for the 920 acre superspeedway began last Summer, and construction of the track foundation, tunnels and grandstand footings began last Fall. Today, the framework of the 75,000-seat grandstands is in place, and construction of the 32 corporate suites is beginning. The grandstands will be completed this Fall, and construction of suites will be finished early next Spring. Both the pedestrian and vehicular tunnels are completed, and the access road encircling the track is surfaced. The foundation and banking of the tri-oval track is in place. Track paving is expected to begin this Fall. "From Route 53, you can see the grandstands rising from the surrounding farmlands. From the air, you can see the outline of the track, the banking of the turns and the tunnels to the infield," said Joie Chitwood, vice president of Raceway Associates and general manager of the facility. "Already, it?s an awesome sight." High-voltage electrical distribution to the site is completed, and most underground utilities, including water and sewage, are installed. The crash wall surrounding the track is being poured. "We were fortunate to have had a mild winter and an early Spring, and that has really helped us keep the construction on schedule and on budget," said Kraig Riebock of Bovis. "We also have found a great workforce here in Will County. Their skills and commitment to the job are evident in the quality of the work here and the relative ease of managing a project this large." This May, Chicagoland Speedway begins expansion of and improvements to the surface streets surrounding the motorsports facility. Laraway Road will be widened to three lanes and the intersection with Laraway and Route 53 is being upgraded. In addition, Schweitzer Road is being resurfaced. Chicagoland Speedway will host two major race weekends featuring the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, the NASCAR Busch Series and the Indy Racing Northern Light Series. Founders P.A.S.S. season tickets go on sale this May, and general season ticket sales begin this Fall. The track is owned by Raceway Associates, LLC, which is made up of the combined interests of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation (IMS), the International Speedway Corporation (ISC) and the founding owners of Route 66 Raceway, LLC. The track is located adjacent to the existing Route 66 Raceway, which opened in 1998 and will be part of the motorsports park. Route 66 includes a state-of-the-art drag strip, 3/8-mile clay oval and road-course test track, with stadium seating for 30,000 fans. It hosts the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Prestone Route 66 Nationals, which features Top Fuel, Funny Cars, Pro Stocks, trucks and motorcycle racing.
